A 26-year-old woman has been found dead inside a container shop at the Effiduase Airport community in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
Her mother was found unconscious, while a 12-year-old girl was left in critical condition.
The deceased has been identified as Freda Agyeiwaa Benson.
Her mother, Leticia Bamfoa, and the 12-year-old girl, Juliet, who was reportedly vomiting blood, were rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital for treatment. Medical staff pronounced Freda dead on arrival, while the two survivors remain on admission receiving treatment.
Speaking to the media, Freda’s fiancé, Kofi Boakye, recounted that the victims had been preparing food in front of the container shop on Friday night ahead of a relative’s wedding scheduled for the weekend. The three later spent the night inside the shop.
According to him, alarm was raised the following morning after repeated knocks on the door went unanswered.
Neighbours and relatives eventually forced the door open and found Freda and her mother unresponsive, while the 12-year-old girl was conscious but extremely weak. The three were immediately rushed to the hospital.
Mr Boakye said preliminary laboratory tests have ruled out suspected food poisoning. He added that doctors have indicated that further investigations, including an autopsy on the deceased, will be conducted to establish the exact cause of the incident.
Community sources also disclosed that there is ongoing litigation over the parcel of land on which the container shop is situated. They further alleged that Freda had received several threats in the past.
Although the incident occurred near the Effiduase District Police Command, the family has yet to lodge an official complaint with the police to facilitate a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
