The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that the government will fully reconstruct sections of the Eastern Corridor Road into an asphalt pavement rather than continue with patch repairs on the existing surface-dressed road.
According to the Minister, the decision was taken after technical assessments revealed that the corridor has exceeded its design life and requires a more permanent and durable solution following years without major rehabilitation.
Mr Agbodza announced an inspection of the 46-kilometre rehabilitation project on the Dodo Pepesu–Nkwanta–Dambai Road being undertaken by Growth 82 Global Limited as part of his nationwide road inspection tour.
He explained that the government’s approach is to reconstruct the road by replacing the road base where necessary and applying a stronger asphalt surface instead of carrying out temporary repairs that may not provide lasting value.
The Minister said the move is aimed at improving road safety, strengthening connectivity along the Eastern Corridor and reducing the cost associated with frequent maintenance and spot repairs.
“We are changing the road base, applying the prime coat before laying the final asphalt surface. This is not a repair of the existing surface dressing. We do not have enough time, and the contractor must work much quicker than this,” he stated.
Mr Agbodza further urged the contractor to accelerate work to ensure the project is completed within schedule, stressing that the government is committed to delivering a durable road network that will support economic activities and improve movement along the corridor.
