The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, says the institution recorded a significant increase in gold sales in 2025, reflecting growing activity within Ghana’s formal gold market.
Mr Gyamfi said the increase was among the notable developments recorded by GoldBod as it assumed a stronger role in the country’s gold-trading sector.
He said the figures demonstrated the growing volume of gold being brought into the formal market under the Board’s regulatory and purchasing framework.
Speaking on JoyNews on Monday, August 10, 2026, Mr Gyamfi said the growth in gold sales was also linked to efforts to formalise the domestic gold trade and improve oversight of transactions within the sector.
“We saw significant increase in gold sales in 2025,” he said.
Mr Gyamfi explained that GoldBod’s expanded operations were helping to bring more gold trading activities into the formal economy, allowing the state to better track transactions, identify market participants and derive greater economic value from the country’s gold resources.
He said the Board’s licensing, assaying and receipting systems were also helping to improve transparency in the sector.
Under the new framework, gold buyers are required to obtain licences and undergo due diligence checks, while transactions are documented to provide greater visibility on the source and movement of gold.
According to Mr Gyamfi, the increase in gold sales should be viewed alongside GoldBod’s other contributions to the economy, including non-tax revenue generation, foreign exchange mobilisation and the accumulation of gold reserves.
He recently disclosed that GoldBod had purchased close to two metric tonnes of gold to support Ghana’s reserves.
The GoldBod CEO said the developments reflected the broader objective of ensuring that Ghana captures more value from its gold resources rather than allowing the benefits of the commodity to be lost through informal and poorly regulated trading arrangements.
Mr Gyamfi maintained that GoldBod would continue to strengthen its systems and expand its oversight of the gold market to ensure that increased gold production and sales translate into greater benefits for the Ghanaian economy.
