The Kpassa–Merimeri road in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region is currently undergoing filling and levelling works as part of efforts to improve its condition and ease the movement of people, goods and services along the route.

The intervention involves the filling and levelling of sections of the road that have deteriorated over time, making some portions difficult for motorists and other road users to navigate, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

Mr Isaiah Kudjoe Dordoe, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nkwanta North, together with the contractor, visited the project site to inspect the ongoing works and assess progress.

During the inspection, the DCE observed the condition of the affected portions of the road and interacted with the contractor on the scope of work and measures being undertaken to improve the road.

The works include filling potholes and eroded portions, levelling uneven sections, and improving areas affected by poor drainage and surface runoff.

The intervention is expected to provide a smoother and safer driving surface, reduce vehicle breakdowns, and improve accessibility for residents, farmers, traders, and other road users who depend on the route for their daily activities.

The Kpassa-Merimeri road serves as an important link for communities along the corridor, facilitating the transportation of agricultural produce and other goods to nearby communities and market centres.

Residents in the area have over the years expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of the road, particularly during the rainy season when erosion and stagnant water worsen already damaged sections.

The ongoing filling and levelling works are therefore expected to bring temporary relief to road users while contributing to improved connectivity within the district.

Speaking during the inspection, Mr Dordoe stressed the importance of maintaining the road to ensure that residents could move freely and transport their farm produce without unnecessary delays and additional costs.

He said improving road infrastructure remained essential to the socio-economic development of the district, particularly in rural communities where agriculture was the main source of livelihood.

The DCE urged the contractor to ensure that the works were executed to the required standards and completed within the agreed timeframe.

He also called on residents and road users to cooperate with the contractor and exercise caution around the construction areas to ensure their safety and facilitate the smooth execution of the project.

The intervention forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nkwanta North District Assembly to improve road accessibility and address critical infrastructure challenges confronting communities in the district.
