The Ashanti Regional Police say they have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association, Samuel Ennin.
One of the two, Kwame Ayew, was earlier this month sentenced to a 21-year jail term for separate robberies after he was picked up at Sandema in the Upper East Region and according to the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frank Adu Poku, it was during his interrogation that he mentioned that the second suspect, one Sheriff Kabore could assist in the search for Ennin’s killers.
DCOP Frank Adu Poku who disclosed the arrests at a news conference in Kumasi on Tuesday said a hood was found on Kabore upon his arrest and he was later identified by witnesses to the shooting incident on February 9, this year which cost the life of Ennin.
Ennin who was also the News Editor of Ash FM, a Kumasi-based radio station, was killed in cold blood on the fateful day at a drinking spot near his home at Old Tafo where unidentified gunmen shot at him.
The police said they initially had a lot of suspects in their search but are convinced they have the men they have been looking for all this while. Police are also convinced that the killing was for robbery.
Apart from Ayew’s claim that Kabore could help with answers to the killing, neither has admitted to the crime. Kabore was remanded into police custody on Tuesday after he appeared in court and will return to the court on April 24, together with Ayew.
Cash rewards in excess of 50 million cedis; from the Police Administration, the Ghana Journalists Association, the Inspector General of Police and a host of others were promised anyone who gave information that could lead to the arrest of the killers.
