The Inspector General of Police Paul Quaye has charged police commanders to maintain discipline and professional conduct in their areas of jurisdiction.
He also wants them to set specific operational goals and targets for personnel under their control. Mr. Quaye was addressing officers in Cape Coast.
It is his first visit since his appointment as IGP.
He warned he would not tolerate any conduct that seeks to undermine respect for human rights, stressing officers caught misbehaving would be severely dealt with.
The IGP promised he was committed to working to achieving world-class professional standards of policing in Ghana.
Mr Quaye’s statement follows a recent massive crackdown on armed robbery especially in Accra and Kumasi.
Police have in combat gunned down scores of armed robbery suspects in the last few months.
Although the service has come under criticism for what has come to be called a shoot-to-kill approach, it has defended its actions citing self defence.
Commissioner of CHRAJ, Francis Emile Short, has defended the high-handed mode of operation of the police against armed robbers. He however believes that must be so only in instances where the life of an officer is in danger.
Director of Police Public Relations DSP Kwesi Ofori has in earlier interviews with the media stressed the police would increase their crusade against armed robbery.
