The Anloga Circuit Court has remanded an Anloga-based businessman, Thomas Teku, aka Destiny, for allegedly murdering a 40-year-old retired policeman, Mr Emmanuel Kpotosu.
Teku's remand is to enable the police to conduct further investigations into the case. The accused is to re-appear in court on September 1, this year.
Mr Kpotosu, according to investigations, died in the Anloga Police cells on August 9, 2009 after he had allegedly been beaten by the suspect and other accomplices before being arrested and locked up by the police.
Information available to the Daily Graphic indicates that Mr Kpotosu was traveling from Tema to Keta on August 8, 2009 and alighted at the Savietula Police Post about 10 p.m., where he had a chat with the policemen on duty.
Eyewitness's accounts say Mr Kpotosu then continued his journey on foot towards Anloga, but on reaching Whuti, near the Anlo Technical College (ANTEC), he was believed to have strayed into the residence of the suspect, Thomas Teku.
According to the source, on entering the house, a scuffle ensued between the businessman and the victim, but the businessman and others managed to overpower Mr Kpotosu and subjected him to severe beatings, tied him with a rope and called in the police.
When the police arrived, the source said they carried the weak and bleeding man to the police station and locked him up in cell.
Mr Kpotosu is said to have passed away the following day while in cell, and the police deposited his body at the mortuary of the Keta Government Hospital around 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased, Madam Celestine Lawuiekpor and Madam Augusta Lawuiekpor, who live at Wui, told the Daily Graphic that they had been expecting Mr Kpotosu, who was their nephew from Tema on Saturday and, therefore, became alarmed when he failed to show up that day.
Consequently, the following day, they began searching for him by stopping all vehicles from Tema to Keta and asking them if they had seen their nephew. They claimed that .they also went to the Anloga Police Station to report the disappearance of their nephew.
They said after several futile attempts to find him, they resorted to radio announcements on a local radio station, adding that on the following Tuesday, they were on a public vehicle after one of their search errands when they eavesdropped on a conversation by passengers that a man had been beaten to death and his body deposited at the Keta Hospital Mortuary.
According to them, they rushed to the mortuary, where it was confirmed that their nephew was the victim being spoken about on the vehicle.
The aunts of the deceased, who are fishmongers plying their trade in Tema, alleged that the police at Anloga had failed to be of any assistance and refused to divulge any information on the circumstances, that led to the death of their nephew.
They have, therefore, appealed to the Inspector General of Police (lGP) to institute investigations into the case to ascertain the truth of the matter.
Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ampah-Bennin, who confirmed the story to the Daily Graphic has stated that the policemen on duty that day had acted unprofessionally, and that he had taken disciplinary action against them.
According to him, when the police went for the man who was then in a critical condition after having been beaten up, they should have taken him to the hospital rather than locking him up in the cells.
