The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party Adams Mahama has died in the hospital following an acid attack on him last night, a family source has told Joy News.
The scene at the family house is one of visible grief. Daughter of the deceased chairman Boya Mohammed was seen wailing uncontrollably has news rocked the family.
Upper East regional correspondent Albert Sore explains that doctors at the Bolgatanga government hospital were unsuccessful in trying to stabilise Adama Mahama before transferring him to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
Adam had been fighting for his life in the hospital after two assailants stopped his car whilst he was about entering his house midnight on Wednesday and poured the corrosive substance on his face and entire body.
Mr. Adams’ aide Zakaria Osman confirmed the attack to Joy News’ regional correspondent Albert Sore. He said his boss was in critical condition, adding that “his whole body is burnt”.
Public Relations Officer of the Upper East Regional Police ASP Thomas Agbanyo who also confirmed the incident to Joy News' Beatrice Adu said one of the assailants has been arrested.
“The stench of the acid was just so much that when we opened the Pick-Up he was driving in all the seats were torn by the acid. He was showered with the acid, from the head through the face to the body and all parts,” he said
ASP Agbanyo noted that the attack could have been necessitated by the Chairman’s alleged involvement in the disruption of a meeting involving the National Chairman of the Party, Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong in Bolgatanga barely a week ago.
The two were touring some areas in the northern part of the country to meet and discuss party issues with members.

The Regional Organiser of the Party Jerry Asamani who organised the meeting for the two was physically assaulted by some NPP activists and sustained some injuries.
The seeming breakdown of unity among the leadership of the party prompted its flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to call on executives of the party to “trust each other and work with each other.”
He was reported to have expressed regret and concern over the “avoidable tensions” and “negative press” that the party had been receiving recently and called for calm.
“All of us are very concerned about these negative incidents. There is no excuse for what happened in the Upper East. The regional leadership has apologised and I am encouraged by the efforts to bring greater understanding going forward from here,” he told the DAILY GUIDE newspaper before he embarked on a 16-day tour of Europe.
