Operators of Credit Union Associations are expressing commitment to extend their activities to more rural areas to afford residents in these areas the opportunity to improve upon their living conditions.
The General Manager of Credit Union Association Emmanuel Oduro-Darko said capacity building is underway for some members to educate more people within rural areas to embrace the concept of credit union.
Speaking at the durbar to mark International Credit Union Day in the Eastern Regional capital Koforidua, Emmanuel Oduro-Darko said the establishment of credit unions in communities as well as among workers have contributed positively to the national fight against poverty.
He said the move would help mobilise the rural people to adopt the habit of savings, and also help them in raising capital for income generating activities.
He added that savings groups are being formed in some first and second cycle schools to help inculcate the habit of saving into the younger generation.
So far the association have formed school saving unions in thirty one senior high and one tertiary institution across the country.
The national Association has also put up a training centre at Kasoa to cater for the human resource need of members and also hire out to the public.
The national Association has also imported and distributed 14,500 savings boxes to mop up excess liquidity in communities where credit unions operate.
