Fire at Petrobay fuel station has forced residents of Kotobabi in Accra to increase their agitation for the removal of the station which shares a wall with a crèche.
The residents fear that the death toll in case of a disaster could be much worse with babies so close to fuel.
The fearful scenario was partially enacted Wednesday morning after a tanker off loading fuel at the Petrobay Fuel Station there caught fire.
Residents fled at the sight of billows of smoke. An alarmed young man told Joy News, he believed his life had come to an end because images of June 3 explosion at another fuel station flashed through his mind.
His house is also close to the station and as he watched people flee he believed it was too late to escape if an explosion occurred.
A worker at the station rushed into the office and returned with a fire extinguisher. The Fire Service was also alerted.
The fire was doused early enough to avert a disaster. Managment of the fuel station has declined to speak to the media.
The growing attention to the siting of fuel stations across the country has come under sharp focus following an explosion at the Goil fuel station on June 3.
The explosion during severe flooding contributed to the over 152 fatalities recorded.
The residents say the station must be removed as soon as possible as the national fear of fuel stations continue.
