The Minister for Gender Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lither, has distributed relief items to households hit by tidal waves and flood in the Keta municipality.

She also donated GHC100 each to support them for the next three months.

According to her, government was committed to easing their plight after floods and tidal waves caused damages to their properties.

During a tour to the affected households and a subsequent distribution of the relief items, the Minister further registered 500 elderly people in the municipality for the National Health Service free of charge.

The Minister, assisted by the MP for Anlo, Kofi Humado, her deputy and also the MP for Kpando, Dela Sowa, and the MCE for Keta municipality, Sylvester Tornyeavah, toured the communities affected to see the extent of damage.

With the support of Direct Aid (an NGO), the affected households received:

1.300 mattress

2.75 cartoons of cooking oil (Frytol)

3.50 cartoons of tin tomatoes

4.300 pieces of blankets

5.300 bags of rice

"We are a social democratic government and we will not sit in Accra but will come from Accra with direct aid to help you" said the Minister.

The MP for Anlo ,Kofi Humado  said that government under the late President Mills and currently under President Mahama have been responsive to the plight of the in the Keta municipality and would continue in that endeavor.

He recalled how President Mahama visited Dzita after the area was cut off from the main town (Keta) following a severe tidal waves that hit.

He however appealed to the Minister to push for the construction of a sea defence wall in Dzita and its environs to forestall a recurrence of the tidal waves disaster.

The Awormefia of Anlo, Torgbui Sri III also expressed gratitude for the Gender Ministry’s relief efforts.

The country Director of Country Aid, Ahmed S.A .Omar said the group is committed to providing for the needy in society especially in trying times.

Direct Aid started its works in 1981 as voluntarily a non-governmental institution with interest in the development in deprived areas in Africa.
