The Prison Service says it will discharge all 900 prisoners who have benefited from President Mahama’s Republic Day amnesty in two days.
The pardon was based on ill health, advanced age and satisfactory behaviour.
A 90-year-old prisoner who made a plea to President Mahama in Seth Kwame Boateng’s documentary ‘Locked and Forgotten’, will be one of the 900 prisoners to be released.
Spokesperson for the Prisons Service DSP Vitalis Aryeh who confirmed the information to Joy News said the required paperwork has begun for the release.
“There are two paper works to be done and the release has just come out and it cuts across the country, so when we get the list we will start working on their papers and this will not take more than two days”.
DSP Aryeh said the exit of the 900 inmates help in decongesting prisons across the country.
“Considering the fact that our prisons are overcrowded, getting 900 people out will ease the burden on us”.
The Service is asking members of the public to accept and support the beneficiaries to integrate well into society.
Meanwhile, DSP Aryeh says those who will be going home will not be given any funds to restart life.
“For now we don’t have anything for anybody leaving the prisons walls in terms of financing or setting them up in business”.
According to him, a new plan called project ‘efiase’ rolled out by the Service will equip inmates with some technical skills and make it easier for them to settle in society once they are out.
He called on members of the public to rather support a new prisons improvement project to be launched today to ensure that prisoners gain skills even in prison.
The President earlier urged the general public and families of beneficiaries to receive the pardoned prisoners back and help integrate into society.
He said the pardoned prisoners should be assisted to live meaningful lives and contribute to society.
