More than 3000 birds have been destroyed in the latest case of bird flu outbreak in Ghana.
The flu was found at a farm in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti region. Recently, some cases were recorded in Accra, Tema and the Volta Region where about 30,000 birds have been culled.
Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi, Kwasi Ofori Agyemang, told Joy News the situation has been contained.
He explained that about three weeks ago the disease was detected so his outfit together with NADMO moved in to quickly destroy about 500 birds on the farm.
Samples, he said, were taken to a laboratory in Kumasi which confirmed the birds were affected with bird flu, “so we moved in to destroy every single item including the 3000 birds that were available”.
Virtually every poultry farm in the municipality has been fumigated, he said, assuring that the area is safe now.
He said authorities there are at a loss as to how the bird flu “jumped over so many towns to land in Obuasi” from Accra.
Mr. Kwasi Agyemang is therefore looking up to the veterinary Service to investigate and explain how that happened.
