Workers of Anglogold Ashanti in Ghana and their management have agreed a three-year pay package but the disturbances at the labour front seem far from over. There has been a long-drawn back-and-forth between the workers and the management of the mining company but sources close to Anglogold have confirmed that the two groups have concluded a three-year collective agreement which takes effect from January 1, 2009. Under this agreement wages and salaries for this year is to go up by 12 percent, 10 percent for 2010 and by the same margin in 2011. A statement signed jointly by the General Secretary of the Mine Workers Union and the vice president of Anglogold Ashanti Ghana, says the two parties also agreed to work to enhance efficiency at the Obuasi and Iduapriem mines. Speaking to Joy Business the General Secretary of the Union Prince William Ankrah said the agreements reached were important but said the issue of salary disparity between expatriate and their Ghanaian counterparts remains unresolved.
