Dear President,
Two months ago, I wrote an open letter to you. I hope the Communications Unit of the Presidency has drawn your attention to the letter. I raised a number of concerns in the letter so that you can speed up your efforts to address those concerns. I communicated to you in the letter about rural Ghana and the level of poverty in our communities and demanded your programme to alleviate this extreme shameful conditions that Ghanaians live in.
I just returned from Talensi where I campaigned for the NPP sponsored candidate in the just concluded bye-election. I spent eight days and mostly campaigned in the West. I heard on radio you also visited the constituency to campaign for your Party's candidate as the leader. You addressed the last rally of the NDC. My information is that you spent less than 48 hours and left. I gathered that you did not visit any community in the constituency probably due to your busy schedule as President of our country. I don't accept that excuse though.
Let me congratulate the MP-elect, B T Baba and your Party for the victory. I wish the newly elected MP well. I wasn't surprised your Party won. The seat has been traditionally yours since it was gerrymandered from the Talensi/Nabdam constituency in 1996 but what struck me was that, majority of the people rejected your candidate and Party. The combined votes of the NPP and the PNC outnumbered the votes gained by your Party. This is unusual per the previous elections results of the constituency. Your Party used to win overwhelmingly.
Mr President, I feel a sense of hopelessness having spent eight days in the constituency. It is a terrible sight of poverty and devastation. The entire constituency appears to be disconnected from Ghana. I saw women and children in dire conditions. In Nung in the far east, a mother of two told me she has not eaten as at 3pm on Friday. When I curiously sought to know why she stayed without food, she told me she doesn't have food at home. I was scandalised that the country you superintend has some parts of it totally cut off. It's a shame!
Mr President, I was further devastated when your Party spent huge sums of money in the constituency just to win the seat. Monies were doled out to the people to entice them to vote for your Party. New projects such as tarring of roads and provision of street lights sprang up.Your Party activists were seen everywhere in the constituency engaged in the distribution of fertilizers, roofing sheets, rice, cutlasses and variety of items to the electorates. The glare sight of wanton bribery and reckless expenditure was wholly unfortunate.
On Republic Day last week, you told Senior Citizens of our country that you will not overspend anymore. The question is; was the irresponsible expenditure of your Party in Talensi budgeted for? I do not think Ghanaians will countenance this deception all of the time.
Your Excellency, I have become less confident in you as my President and the government you lead. It appears you have lost it badly. Our country is bleeding and there is no antidote to stop the blood. We are left to bleed to death.
The people of Talensi exercised their democratic right and voted for your Party's candidate but I tell you, they are severely affected by the worsening economic conditions of the country. You might have to revisit the area broadly to appreciate the enormous challenges faced by the people. Their standard of living is nothing to write home about.
I urge you to sit up and deliver your core mandate of ensuring the wellbeing and security of the people as the President. Ghana is "segregated" and majority are living without dignity.
God bless our country.
Thank you.
Musah Superior
A Ghanaian Citizen.
