The Ashaiman Municipal Authority has begun a massive decongestion exercise to rid the city of all traders and hawkers who sell on pavements and in unauthorized structures. The exercise, according to the Authority, is to allow for free flow of traffic.
The Municipal Engineer, Isaac Lamptey says street hawking in Ashaiman does not only pose danger to the lives of the hawkers but also causes human and vehicular traffic which often leads to the loss of several man hours.
Isaac Lamptey told Adom News in an interview that some of the hawkers operate in unauthorized structures which also serve as their abode. This, he said, generates both liquid and solid waste which they dispose of indiscriminately in drains and other unapproved areas.
Mr. Lamptey also expressed concern about the unprecedented levels of vehicular and human traffic in the municipality due to the large numbers of traders who occupy every available space.
Some of the affected victims told Adom Kaseεbo that they were not served with any notices.
