Three men, Yiyi Anor, Mensah Amawoigi and Eric Amoah, have been arrested by the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters for sabotaging an ultra-modern mast belonging to telecommunications giant, Glo Mobile Ghana. The mast, valued at US$100,000, which was still under construction at the Batsonaa area of Accra when the incident occurred, has consequently been rendered unusable, and has been dismantled by the telecommunications firm, to avert any danger to residents situated near the site. According to police reports, on Saturday December 19, 2009, one Mr. Selorm Dzormeku, a businessman whose house is situated a few metres from the approved site where the telecommunication mast was being rigged, allegedly contracted Messrs Anor and Amawoigi to pull down the mast, which had by then been erected to a height of about 50 metres. Yiyi and Mensah, in their statement to the police, claimed that they charged Mr. Dzomeku GH¢20 for the job, and received GH¢5 as part payment to destroy the mast. After failed attempts to cut through the reinforced steel structure of the mast using welding electrodes, Messrs Yiyi and Mensah said they proceeded to hire a grinding machine from Amoah, connected electricity directly from Mr. Dzomeku’s house, and thereafter started cutting two of the mast’s main supporting structure located on the property of Mr. Hlordzi Godson de-Gaulle. The police said a Good Samaritan alerted them about the incident, following which they swiftly moved in and arrested the alleged saboteurs, while they were still in the act. The police also said they were awaiting the landlord’s daughter, who was allegedly locked in with her siblings in their room while the crime was being perpetrated, to make her official statement by Wednesday, before sending the case to court. It was gathered that one of the landlord’s children, who managed to escape through a window, sought help from the ‘Good Samaritan,’ who assisted in alerting the police. The police said that preliminary investigations into the matter, further indicated an attempt to commit murder, adding that they would pursue the matter diligently, and ensure that the culprits faced the full wrath of the law, if found guilty. All the suspected culprits are in police custody, and will be arraigned before the court on Thursday December 24, 2009, said police authorities.
