The Right Reverend John Harvey-Ewusi, Methodist Bishop of the Sekondi Dioceses, has said moral education was necessary for the nation's growth and poverty reduction. He said moral growth could be achieved through the assistance and recognition of the role of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Harvey-Ewusi was speaking at the opening of the 46th synod of the Methodist Church at Discove. He said the country's pre-independence freedom fighters recognized the value and importance of God in nation Building. Bishop Harvey-Ewusi said the role of the Church in the independence struggle for Ghana was through the provision of sound educational and health infrastructure to meet the needs of the people of that era. He noted that the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers directed, corrected and restored their faith continually. Bishop Harvey-Ewusi also said the Spirit kept transforming people on daily basis, adding that the Church had gone through several changes under the direction of the Holy Spirit. He observed that the adoption of the Episcopal system of leadership and liturgy and change in worship were all signs of the dynamic nature of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Harvey-Ewusi said many people abandoned the Church due to indifference thereby contributing to the proliferation of independent Churches "that has no clear succession plan and basis and in the process leading many astray".
