An assault on NDC Ahafo Ano North constituency chairman Samuel Awuni that left him hospitalized was caused by a fight over a party vehicle, it has emerged.
Tepa District Police Commander Cosmo Adena Damoah confirmed this to Joy News Monday.
“It is about who should take over their party vehicle” he said.
The District Police Commander explained that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman was the first to report to the police station Sunday evening at about 7pm.
He had injuries on his head and right eye and reported his treasurer as responsible for the assault.
Moments later, the treasurer Alhassan Adams walked into the police station spotting injuries on his upper lip and bruises over his body. He also reported being beaten by his chairman.
The police gave them medical forms to go to the hospital for treatment.
The party chairman had instructed that the tyres of the car be deflated but the treasurer did not take kindly to the instruction.
A fight ensued. The treasurer does not dispute he caused injuries to his constituency chairman but maintained it was in retaliation.
The two are accusing each other of battering.
Adams also disputes reports that he used a knife on the party chairman. Joy News correspondent Precious Semevor says the treasurer insists he used a car key.
The treasurer has been granted bail while the chairman is responding well to treatment.
Although the police say they have begun investigations, the District Commander is “hoping” that the party leadership will “sit up” and settle the “internal matter”.
He says the assault was a "minor" offence.
