Trouble is brewing at the Kumasi Abattoir as some butchers vow to resist imposition of levies by their leaders.
Over 400 butchers have been asked to pay 40 Ghana cedis to facilitate a trip by a delegation to Accra to meet officials of the Agric Ministry over introduction of some policies affecting butchers.
The move has however angered some of them who believe they are being exploited by their leadership.
Butchers who fail to pay the GH¢40 risk losing their places at the Kumasi Abattoir as the chief butcher is bent on collecting the money.
Nhyira News checks reveal though some of the butchers had complied with an earlier directive to pay 20 Ghana cedis but they will not pay extra 20 Ghana cedis being imposed on them.
They tell Nhyira Fm they would not succumb to threats by the chief butcher to dismiss them from the abattoir.
Mohammed Bashiru Taru is one of butchers leading this crusade against payment of the fees.
He recalled in the 1980s, similar events led to violence resulting in loss of lives and severe injuries, warning the incident could repeat itself if the issue is not addressed.
But the Chief Butcher insists the protesters have no right to question or resist payment of the money meant to seek the welfare of all butchers.
He is angered by the decision of the butchers to go public with the issue for which reason he demanded Nhyira News to disclose our source before responding to the issue.
In fact, he threatens to release people he describes as his ‘boys’ to attack any butcher who is responsible for putting the matter in the media.
