Most parts of  Ghana's capital, Accra and the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi, are the worst affected by a power crisis as the Electricity Company of Ghana has been forced to shed 590 megawatts.

No official reasons have been given but Francis Abban of Joy News' Energy Desk has gleaned that technical problems with a fuse at N-Gas pipeline in Nigeria caused a drop in gas supply of about 100 million cubic feet.

The incident which occured on Saturday is having a significant toll in gas supply to Tema gas enclave where Sunon Asogli power plants are stationed.

It is taking time to fix the problem in Nigeria and restore normal supply levels, sources told Joy News' Francis Abban. This has left only one unit of the Asogli power plant running.

Sources also say recent rainstorm has affected power cables and power equipments which now need to be repaired.

ECG shed about 300 megawatts last week but the erratic situation is set to worsen as nearly double the amount is being shed this week.

The new low in the supply of power is expected to leave Accra without 210 megawatts and Kumasi losing 120 megawatts.

Tema, an industrial city will be down by 100 megawatts. Central and Eastern regions will lose 40 megawatts each and Western region, 60 megawatts.

The Volta region will suffer a 20 megawatt shortage, the Joy News' Energy Desk has gathered.

Government has scheduled an emergency crisis meeting Thursday afternoon with power players, VRA, ECG and GRIDCO to discuss the new round of loadshedding.
