The police have impound­ed about 800 unregistered vehicles in Accra in a bid to get rid of such and unlicensed vehicles in the system.

The vehicles were impounded in a special operation organized by all the divisional police commands in the Accra metropolis.

Commander in-charge of the Accra Regional Police, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said there are several cars in Accra that do not have registration numbers while most are suspected to have been used in criminal activities, making it difficult for the police to trace them.

He made this known at a press briefing after the exercise on Tuesday.

"Some buy the cars in the mid­dle of the year and instead of regis­tering them, they use the vehicles until the following year so that they can get a new number but this act is wrong and against the road traffic regulations," he revealed.

Per the road traffic act (2014), a trade licence could be used when a motor vehicle has been offloaded from the ship and is to be driven to a garage.

The unlicensed number plate could also be used when the vehi­cle is being tested or tried by a prospective buyer.

DCOP Tetteh Yohuno noted that instead, the drivers use the vehicles in doing their work, for weddings and other social events.

He said it becomes difficult for the police to trace suspects using such vehicles when they are involved in accidents and run away.

The Regional Commander said the exercise would continue until those using such vehicles register them.

The police boss urged drivers to register their vehicles at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) offices after clearing them from the harbour.

Those who are not able to do so must have a log book in which every entry must be made, he said.

Those drivers whose vehicles have been impounded will be arraigned before court today.
