A deputy minister of education, has assured parents that the Ministry have put in place proper measures for the smooth placement of 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in senior high schools and technical institutes before the commencement of the 2015/2016 academic year.
According Alex Kyeremeh, the ministry together with officials at the Computerised Schools Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), are working around the clock to make it possible for students to enter the various schools.
He was speaking Wednesday on Adom FM’s “Burning Issues” with Afia Pokua on the challenges facing students who are expected to be admitted into the various Senior High Schools.
Most of the students have not gotten admission into the SHS. Over 20,000 JHS graduates are at home waiting for their placement into the various SHS across the country.
Recently, scores of angry parents besieged the offices of the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service following delays in placing their wards in their preferred schools.
Alex Kyeremeh has urged the parents to exercise patience. He said the ministry understands their frustrations.
“We at the ministry understand how the parents and their wards feel as far as the placement system is concern, but we will ensure that all student gets admission” Alex Kyeremeh stated.
He also cautioned parents against the payment of money to individuals who claim they can influence officials of the secretariat to place Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates into senior high schools of their choice.
The Deputy Minister of Education, in charge of pre-tertiary education also warned education officers and headmasters who are taking money illegally from parents to place its ward must desist from such practice.
The Computerised School Selection and Placement System is a system used by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to place qualified Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates into Senior High School (SHS)/ Technical Institute (TI)/ Vocational Institute.
The operation of the CSSPS is carried out by a Secretariat which is a unit of the Secondary Education Division of GES.
CSSPS was a policy change from the GES Council as a result of challenges emanating from the manual system of selection and placement.
The CSSPS became operational in September 2005 under ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor’s regime, two years after the GES Council has taken the decision in 2003 to implement it. About two years was used to do the preparatory work to ensure a smooth take off.
It seeks to improve the manual system of selection and placement of qualified BECE candidates into Public and Private SHS, TI and Vocational Institutes by replacing the Manual System with a Computerised one but some people believes that the sector minister has fail in improving the system over the years.
