The Police in Kumasi have identified a man they said stabbed and killed a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asawase Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
At a press conference in Kumasi, Monday morning, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander revealed one Dunia alias Muhammadu stabbed Saddiq Abubakar on Friday leading to his death.
DCOP Kofi Boakye emphasized that the investigation is devoid of any partisan, tribal or any sectional considerations.
“We would like people to allow the police to do their work. This is a murder investigation, all that we know is that somebody has been killed,” he stated.
Abubakar Saddiq was murdered Friday afternoon in an attack linked to the suspension of the party's National Chairman, Paul Afoko. Abubakar was stabbed a few meters away from the NPP constituency office in Asawase.
Reports indicate the assailants, who were on a motorbike, attacked Saddiq with machetes and quickly sped away.
Abubakar Saddiq was one of the loyalists of NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, who locked up the Asawase Constituency office, Thursday in protest over comments made by the Chairman of the Constituency, Isaac Brenya in a radio interview.
Isaac Brenya had called on the 2016 NPP flagbearer to step down.
Mr. Brenya was himself in Accra to participate in a demonstration against the party's decision to suspend Paul Afoko.
The protest ended peacefully but the Asawase chairman's comments attracted angry reaction from Nana Akufo-Addo's supporters in the constituency, leading to the death of Saddiq.
The 61-year-old father of the deceased who bears the same name as his son, Abubakar Saddiq wants those responsible for the murder punished.
According to the regional Police command, one Bawa Musa believed to be involved in the actual chasing of the deceased is in police custody.
"W are looking for 'Big Man Lebu' who was holding a locally manufactured pistol and 'Dunia’ alias Muhammadu, who, and it is confirmed, actually stabbed Saddiq Abubakar in a single alley after he had been chased by 'Lebu’ holding a locally manufactured pistol," he said.
DCOP Kofi Boakye said because of the serious nature of the crime, the investigation is under the direct command of the Regional Police Commander and under the supervision of the Crime Officer.
The Police have also arrested the Asawase Constituency Chairman of the NPP and six others in connection with the killing.
Isaac Brenya and some others in Police custody to help with investigations.
