A number of cocoa loaders of the Produce Buying Company in the Eastern Region have threatened to embark on a strike over low remunerations.
The workers complained at a meeting attended by 40 cocoa loaders at Suhum that two years ago they sent a petition to the management to increase their loading fee from 500 cedis per bag of cocoa but were yet to receive any response.
A spokesman for the workers, Stephen Kwaku Bediako, told the Ghana News Agency that the 500 cedis per bag of cocoa is too low because apart from the loading, the workers also undertake stocking, grading and sealing of the cocoa bags.
He said in spite of several increases in the daily minimum wage by the government, the company has refused to increase the loading fee.
Mr. Bediako said the causal workers, some of who have served for more than 10 years receive about 100,000 cedis per month whenever they loaded an articulator truck. According to him, at the end of the month if no articulator truck is loaded the workers go home without any money.
He alleged that some of the watchmen have not received their pay for the past eight months but when a complaint was made to the Eastern Regional Manager of the Company, he become offended and asked the workers to go home.
