Hello there!
I want to tell you about a friend of mine, we will call her ‘Trisha’ so she doesn’t chew me when she reads this.
She is such a lady, always composed no matter the situation. She laughs, sits, walks, stands...does everything just like a lady. As I write this article, she is about six months pregnant and boy you should see her...make up always on point, hair clean, tidy and classy, well dressed every time, so calm and collected, still manages her business, performs her Mummy/wife duties.
I mean she is really The Fabulous Woman!
However, she has one tiny problem: Trisha does not see just how fabulous she is. No, she doesn't see herself as possessing these great attributes I see in her. In fact, she actually told her sister in these exact words 'when Ama Duncan is describing me, it's as if she's talking about someone else' Like seriously? How on earth is Trisha not able to see how fabulous she is? I wonder!
So one day, I was talking to my husband about Trisha, going on and on about how I couldn’t understand why she just refused to see the beautiful side of her. In fact, I was frustrated with her and I wished I could make her see what I saw in her. I was moaning tirelessly when my husband interrupted me with 'oh you mean she's like you'? That hit me, hard! But of course, I recovered quickly and pretended he hadn't said anything at all while dearest husband of mine just shook his head, laughed at me and went about his business.
I knew very well that he had spoken the truth: like a lot of fabulous women I hardly ever saw the good in me. Actually, I know quite a number of women who feel as Trisha (and I) does- unable to see just how fabulous they are. Sometimes when I contact women whose lives I see as so inspirational and ask them to share their stories on The Fabulous Woman Network, the typical answer I get is 'hahahahaaa me? My story is still being written. You wait, when I accomplish A, B and C then you can share my story' And I'm thinking, Oh my God, how can this woman not know how inspirational her story already is?
But why was it so? Why do we always see other people as all that; perfect, beautiful, confident, fabulous, etc but never see such in our own selves. We see other people’s marriages, jobs, looks and homes as better than ours. Trisha said to me recently when we were talking about this subject 'maybe God made some of us that way in order to let us remain humble' Perhaps it's true, perhaps it's false.
One thing I know for sure is that I feel good when someone tells me my positives even though my initial reaction is usually to dismiss what they are saying. So for this reason I have decided to make a conscious effort to mirror my fellow fabulous sisters' positives. I will point out the good in them, because I know how praise affects me…I perform better. Even God enjoys praise and requires that from mankind.
Ama Duncan’s pledge to Trisha and all my fabulous sisters: I will make an intentional effort to mirror you. I will drum your positives into your head until you believe them. Will you mirror me too so that we can shine together?
I believe that there is more room in the universe for us ALL to shine as God created us to.Ready?
