JICA and Sony, global leaders in electronics in collaboration with the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana and Ghana AIDS Commission, are using the World Cup in South Africa to educate the people of Ayenga on HIV/AIDS.
The public forum dubbed: "JICA and Sony Public Viewing in Ghana Football against HIV/ AIDS," being organised in the Dangme West District of the Greater Accra Region involved a live show of the World Cup matches on a big television screen, which is being replicated in 17 different locations across Ghana alongside free counselling and testing for HIV.
The programme is creating the platform for the audience to obtain information on the modes of HIV transmission, how to prevent infection and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS among other things.
A representative from JICA, Ikumi Koike said JICA seeks to play an important role in efforts to fight the pandemic.
The Presiding Member for the Dangme West District, Mr Emmanuel Akornotey urged the participants to strive to know their HIV/AIDS status since the virus is real.
The District Director of Education, Mrs Freda Koasi said the policy objective of the Ghana Education Service on HIV and AIDS is to identify and promote programmes that would assist in the preventing infections.
She said under the policy, teachers are trained as HIV/ AIDS counsellors.
