Members of some five business association who have closed down shops across the country to protest tax increases have said they will extend their action unless government heeds a call review the tax regime.

The three-day strike ended Wednesday but the associations are considering an extension.

The striking business associations want the abolishment of tax stamps, a 2% tax on special import, a review of the ECOWAS CET tariff among a raft of other government taxes.

The associations include Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Food and Beverage Importers Association of Ghana, Institute of Freight Forwarders among others.

They have come together to form the Joint Consultative Forum in a bid to strengthen pressure on government to heed their demands.

The say the taxes have choked the business environment.

Spokesperson for the Joint Consultative Forum, John Awuni, said they are determined to get government to listen to them.

He spoke on Business Trends hosted by George Wiafe.

However, speaking on the same program, Tax Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Edward Larbi Siaw said the ministry is committed to engaging the striking business associations for the strike to be called off.

Another guest on the programme, a tax consultant, Abdallah Ali Nakyea, said contrary to claims by the business owners, they are not being over taxed.
