Police officers and Fire service personnel worked hard to avert a potentially fatal disaster after a gas tanker overturned at the Tight Top section on the Mallam-Kasoa Highway Wednesday.
The incident occurred at 5:00 am as Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) leaked badly on the road. Drivers and passengers took to their heels for fear of an explosion.
The initial panic ebbed away when security team led by Accra Regional Police Commander, COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, arrived on the scene. Firefighters used sprayed foam on and around the leaking gas tanker.
Passengers alighted from buses as they pondered how to get to work. The overturned tanker had blocked the road.
Daylight was gradually appearing and workers who could no longer wait begun to trek.
Fear of an explosion gave way to anxiety to get to work as passengers made a long walk to the next bus station.
It took more than 4 hours to remove the tanker.
The ensuing traffic was an emotionally draining experience.
Probably thinking about how to get the tanker off the busy road to allow free flow of traffic.
