The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Central Region has accused the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ekumfi of illogical use of his powers.
The DCE, Ibrahim Dawson, is reported to have ordered the arrest of a teacher, Daniel Hammond, for allegedly insulting him.
The teacher was arrested last week by the police and remanded until GNAT officials in the region secured a bail for him Thursday morning.
The Central Regional GNAT Secretary, Boadu Abedu William tells Joy News the teacher was picked up like a criminal while he was teaching.
“While executing his duties, two strong policemen went to the school and informed him that he was under arrest. When he questioned them, he was told that the DCE who is also head of the security committee asked them to pick him up and question him," said William.
“The headmaster tried to prevent them from arresting the teacher but they refused. They should have under normal circumstances obliged and moved but they did not,” he added.
This in his view is unacceptable and should not be allowed to occur ever again.
He does not understand why the teacher was treated in a manner that portrayed him as a criminal.
He says GNAT has hired a lawyer to bail the teacher but thinks the District Chief Executive is abusing his powers.
