The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, has denied allegations that he said people had died during the Atiwa by-election.In a press statement issued and sign by Mahama Haruna, aide to Mr Obetsebi Lamptey, at no point did the NPP Chairman say two people had been killed. However, Myjoyonline can confirm Mr Jake Obetsebi Lamptey said he had heard 'unconfirmed' reports that one person had been killed."The car of Anita De-Souza drove into the crowd [of NPP supporters] crashing people and hurting them with reportedly but unconfirmed that there is one dead," Mr Obetsebi Lamptey told Benard Saibu - on Joy FM's Newsnight programme on the evening of the election day - of an incident at Abomosu in the Atiwa constituency.Anita De-Souza is the National Women's Organiser of the National Democratic Congress. In the statement issued from his outfit and mailed to Myjoyonline, However, Mr Obetsebi Lamptey said he had been wrongly quoted as having said two persons had died during the incident."Since the Atiwa by-election ended an erroneous impression is being bandied round by leading members of the NDC that NPP National Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey said two people died at Abomosu in the Atiwa constituency after Anita de Souza's vehicle allegedly ploughed into a group of NPP activists.
"The NDC Propaganda Sectary especially has been jumping from Radio station to the other to accuse Jake Obetsebi Lamptey of saying two people were dead in Atiwa when no one died.
"Other NDC members have called on the IGP, Mr. Paul Tawia Quaye to arrest Jake Obetsebi Lamptey for making unsubstantiated reports on various radio stations that three people died and challenged Jake to produce the three dead bodies.
"Indeed Jake granted an interview to Joy FM shortly after the polls closed but at no point did he state that two people were dead. As National Chairman of the NPP Jake is aware of the repercussions of making unsubstantiated allegations and comments. He was also guided by the fact that he did not personally see any dead bodies though there were many calls to him to the effect that two of the victims that were being conveyed to hospital were dead," the statement said.Mr Obetsebi Lamptey said he would cooperate with any investigation into the matter."Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey who is currently attending an International Conference of the NPP in Germany welcomes any investigation into the violence that characterised the Atiwa by-election but is surprised it has taken the Police two weeks to start an investigation," the statement said.Play the attached audio on what Jake Obetsebi said on the election daySource: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
