MTN Ghana says it is ready for the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) system any day because they are confident that when the system starts they have what it takes to get some of the customers of their competitors.Other telecom operators in the country publicly declared their readiness for MNP years ago but the market leader, MTN either remained silent or pointed to some challenges anytime the MNP discussion comes up.Some of the other operators have raised suspicions that MTN has been trying to stall the implementation of MNP.But the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Brett Goschen tells News Editors at a forum that MTN is ready for MNP and they are ready to go get some of the customers of their competitors when the system starts.Mobile Number Portability is a system that will give power to phones users to migrate their phone number from one network completely to a different network, such that one can for instance use a phone number which begins with 024 (MTN) on another network like TIGO.It empowers phone users to leave networks with poor quality to a better one and yet keep their number wholly.When MNP was implemented in South Africa, MTN lost 80,000 customers to other networks but did not gain much from other networks.Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana, Mrs. Mawuena Trebarh says MTN is ready for MNP in Ghana but the regulator, National Communications Authority needs to iron out a few things to ensure smooth implementation.The NCA in the past said MNP was expensive and cumbersome for the telecom operators, but some telecom operators disagreed with the NCA saying that some of the projects operators are currently undertaking are more expensive and cumbersome than MNP.
