The Mo Ibrahim foundation has ranked Ghana 7th out of 53 countries in its 2010 index on performance of African countries.
The Mo Ibrahim index which measures the delivery of public goods and services by African governments says Ghana performed creditably in rule of law but abysmally in public management.
The country’s score according to the foundation is higher than the average score for both West Africa and the continent.
The latest results measure quality of governance for the period between 2008 and 2009. On specifics, Ghana was ranked 4th on rule of law but placed 31st in the management of public institutions.
On accountability and corruption Ghana placed 8th and 19 on how government handles national security. On the quality of education based on enrolment in school from junior school level to senior level Ghana came 10th, and 16th on health and welfare delivery.
In all, West Africa was the third-highest ranking region in the 2010 Ibrahim Index.
West Africa achieved its highest ranks, at second out of the five regions, in Participation and Human Rights and in Safety and Rule of Law. In Sustainable Economic Opportunity and Human Development, West Africa was ranked third and fourth respectively.
Cape Verde was the best performing country in the region in all four categories of the Ibrahim Index and consequently for overall governance quality. Guinea was the worst performing country in the region.
The Ibrahim index released on Monday generally shows recent gains in many countries in human and economic development but declines in political rights, personal safety and the rule of law.
