The vigilance of a ward assistant at the Kwadaso Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) Hospital in Kumasi thwarted an attempt by a patient on admission at the hospital to sniff a whitish substance, believed to be cocaine, at the hospital's lavatory. Aisha Fuseini who was receiving medical attention for an ulcer aliment, nearly turned the hospital's lavatory into a 'ghetto' base as she attempted to sniff a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine. Briefing Daily Guide in an interview, Margaret Atiemo, director of nursing at the hospital, said Aisha reported to the hospital on Saturday September 11, 20 I 0 with a case of stomach complication. She disclosed that after a comprehensive diagnosis, Aisha, who was accompanied by a hunchback, friend, Michael Djikunu, was found to be suffering from ulcer and was therefore admitted for medical attention. According to the director of nursing, whilst Aisha was on admission and receiving medical treatment, Michael visited his friend frequently. Miss Atiemo noted that on Monday September 13, 2010, when Michael came to the hospital to visit Aisha as usual, a ward assistant who was on duty at the lime became suspicious of a conversation the two friends were having and therefore decided to watch them. She pointed out that after conversing for a while, Aisha, who was showing visible signs of recovery, suddenly told the ward assistant that she wanted to go to the lavatory and ease herself. The director of nursing said immediately Aisha started heading towards the direction of the lavatory, Michael followed her, a development which heightened the suspicion of the ward assistant. In an attempt to satisfy her curiosity, the ward assistant, Miss Atiemo indicated, followed them to the lavatory only to find Aisha and Michael in the ladies toilet, busily opening up a matches box he (Michael) had pulled from his pocket. Alarmed by the outrageous spectacle, the director of nursing noted, the ward assistant drew the attention of the security detail at the hospital, who quickly rushed to the lavatory. Miss Atiemo stated that to the utter surprise of the security detail, Aisha and Michael had poured a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine on a white pad and were about to snuffle the substance. According to her, when the security detail look the whitish powdered substance from Aisha and Michael and their bodies thoroughly searched, a matches’ box containing some sticks, a stick of cigarette and some white pads were found. She said when the issue was reported to management and Aisha and Michael were interrogated, Aisha categorically admitted that they were about to sniff cocaine and that Michael was her long time 'ghetto' friend. Overwhelmed by the situation, Miss Atiemo noted that the Ashanti regional police command was notified and Aisha and Michael were subsequently arrested together with the whitish substance. She pointed out that Aisha emphatically told them that she would not pay for the cost of her treatment because the hospital management did not have mercy on her as they caused her arrest. The director of nursing, who stated that management of the hospital was appalled by the development, said though Aisha had refused to pay her cost, the hospital was delighted that Aisha and her friend did not succeed in their illicit mission. When the deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ashanti regional police command, Corporal Godwin Ahyianyo, was contacted, he confirmed the incident and disclosed that the suspects have been remanded into prison custody by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) court in Kumasi.
