The Vice-President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, says the government has recorded history on several fronts in its management of the national economy over the past 18 months.Mr Mahama cited the stabilisation of the national currency and falling inflation, saying the cedi had stabilised for the longest period since it was deregulated and for the first time in the history of the country, inflation had dropped consistently for 12 consecutive months to the current single digit.He said the international community viewed those achievements as unprecedented.The Vice-President was addressing a gathering of National Democratic Congress (NDC) party members at a special fund-raising dinner dance in London, to raise funds for a new party office complex in Accra.The well-attended function attracted members of the diplomatic corps and party members and sympathisers.Prominent among them was the South African High Commissioner to the UK, Dr Zola Skweyiya."We have worked phenomenally in respect of putting our economy on a very sound footing," Mr Mahama said.He said the country had been able to achieve this by putting in place pleasant economic measures among other things, to drastically reduce food import and boost local food production.Mr Mahama expressed delight in the enhancement of the nation's food basket, saying, "We have been able to achieve this primarily due to the food production policies and programmes that are going on very well."The Vice-President stated that by the end of this year, the nation's GDP would grow by seven per cent with the figure rising to between 10 and 15 per cent in 2012 and predicted that Ghana's GDP might double between six and seven years time considering the pace of development of the economy.He said the NDC was determined to lead Ghanaians to achieve "the better Ghana" it had promised them, acknowledging that "all is not that smooth but with dedication, commitment and the zeal of all we will deliver."Mr Mahama said the country was making a I lot of strides in the right direction.
