President JEA Mills is angry at the reported mass rapes passengers of a Tamale-bound bus were subjected to by suspected armed robbers, the Communications Director at the Castle has said. Koku Anyidoho, said the president is meeting with his security chiefs Thursday and will be issuing “very, very strong directives [to] them to [search] and find the perpetrators of this heinous crime.” He said although there was reduction in recorded criminal activities in the country, the recent upsurge “is what is making the president step in strongly and insist that the military, the police, everybody must get out there and fight crime head-on.” He will not answer whether there are any specific plans to provide any special logistical support to the security agencies to boost their effectiveness in combating crime except to say that the president had shown enough commitment to resourcing the security agencies. Mr Anyidoho said the president expects the police and the military to use the resources at their disposal to stem the tide. Armed robbers reportedly forced male passengers aboard a Tamale-bound bus from Accra a fortnight ago to have sex with female passengers after robbing them of virtually everything. The horrifying experience occurred on Monday, October 11, 2010 between the hours of 1am and 2 am at a spot near Kintampo where the armed robbers struck. A passenger and near-victim who was only spared because she was menstruating told journalists the gang forced a man to break her own daughter’s virginity as they poked guns at his head to have sex with the about 14-year-old girl or pay with his life. The man was taking his daughter to school as she had gained admission to the Tamale Senior High School. The incident ignited a huge public outcry prompting the president to haul his security to the Castle for a meeting to find a solution to situation. Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Ghana
