Former President Jerry John Rawlings’ criticisms of ex-President JA Kufuor and President JEA Mills during the official re-opening of the Nsawam Cannery has led Malik Kweku Baako, an avowed critic of the Rawlingses wondering if God really lives.
Mr. Rawlings accused the Kufuor administration of looting state assets - Ghana Airways, state lands, and departing from the sound economic foundation he, Rawlings' government, had put in place before leaving power in 2000.
He said that is the reason for the increasing unemployment that has engulfed the country.
According to him, the Nsawam Cannery had “rotten” but Kufuor created the impression as though it was a place filled with diamond.
The Mills administration, Rawlings noted, is not doing any better in alleviating the unemployment situation in the country, saying the situation has worsened. So worse that the word ‘pain’ is now the official response to greetings in northern Ghana.
But reacting to Rawlings’ comments on Peace FM on Wednesday, the Editor in Chief of the Crusading Guide newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr. was appalled saying, the Rawlingses have managed to turn vice into virtue.
He said he does not see anything wrong with the wife of a president acquiring a state asset, provided the right procedures are followed. But he will not accept an ex-president who he said allowed a state property - Nsawam Cannery to rot, “looted” it in process, only to turn around and accuse others of looting.
He said the Nsawam Cannery was in business in 1985 during the reign of the Provisional National Defence Council of which Mr. Rawlings was leader and had almost 13 years to salvage the Cannery from its doldrums until it was divested in 1995 to the 31st December Womens Movement led by Mrs Konadu Rawlings.
If Rawlings is saying the Nsawam Cannery was rotten and nobody wanted it, who is to blame for it? He quizzed.
According to Malik Baako, Mrs Rawlings owes the state over GH¢2 million being interest accrued for the late payment for the Nsawam Cannery, and charged the Mills administration to collect the money for the state.
The Rawlingses, he is convinced, breached all procedures in acquiring the Cannery and for the ex-president to pontificate and accuse others of looting state assets when he is re-opening a looted asset is what made him question if God is really alive, just, and fair.
