Angry workers of Atlantic Port Services, a stevedoring company in Tema are said to have severely assaulted their Managing Director Geoffery Biney. The MD was allegedly ambushed yesterday at the Labour Commission where union leaders and his colleague managers had gone for arbitration. The workers’ action is said to be linked to the failure of the company to pay them salaries for the past seven months. The MD’s clothes were said to have been torn to shreds after the heavy beating.Labour Commission Chair Joseph Aryittey confirmed the incident to Joy News shortly after briefing police officers who had been called in to maintain law and order.Mr Aryittey said the angry chased the MD to the Labour Commission’s conference room and tried to storm the building to further assault him.But staff of the commission and Mr Biney’s lawyers managed to restrain them until the police arrived “and escorted the Managing Director half naked to the police station to make a statement.”The workers are alleged to have also attacked Mr. Biney’s sister who was taking photographs of the confrontation. They left before police arrived at the Labour Commission. The MD and his sisters have been issued forms to seek medical attention while police begin investigations into the matter.Source: Joy News/Ghana
