Naa Seidu Braimah, representative of the Upper West Region on the Council of State, has appealed to private developers in the Wa Municipality to stop charging high rent from students of the University for Development Studies (UDS).
He said Universities have been tasked to turn out professional for national development and the charging of high rent should not prevent the youth from acquiring education.
Naa Braimah cited that the private developers were charging between 200 Ghana Cedis and 400 Ghana Cedis per single room for a year.
The Council of State member, who is also the Goli Naa, made the appeal when members of the Sonni, Ahlsunna and Ahmadiyya Muslim groups called on Alhaji Issahaque Salia, Upper West Regional Minister, after prayers were said to mark this year's Eid-ul-Adha festival, in Wa on Tuesday.
Naa Braimah called on the people to unite for the development of the area and appealed to the Assembly to extend electricity and water to all parts of the Municipality, to promote health and economic activities such as cottage industry.
Residents GNA spoke with, said private developers in the Municipality had turned deaf ears to appeals by opinion leaders to reduce rent, and three or four students were sharing a rented single room, which was affecting their studies and health.
They appealed to politicians and other opinion leaders in the Region to organise a forum for private developers and discuss how to address the problem.Source: GNA
