The government has released 60 billion cedis for a national street naming exercise aimed at a facilitating spatial planning and revenue mobilization.
Deputy Interior Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Many who disclosed this however indicated that since the national programme was self financing, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies would be made to generate their own money to co- finance the project.
He gave the hint at a workshop at the weekend which is to enable stakeholders mainly Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to brain storm on the project.
Mr Agyeman- Manu said the exercise “would facilitate revenue generations since its comprehensive computerized data- base would capture all eligible tax payers in a given locality.
Revenue collection agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service would also benefit from the project to enhance revenue generation by using the same data to reach potential tax payers, he said and added: “One can comfortably sit in one’s office and locate who has not paid tax or electricity bill.
Professor Paul Yankson, member of the National Street Naming Technical Committee said the project had taken off on a pilot basis at Tarkwa in the Western Region and at Konongo Odumase, Bekwai and Offinso in the Ashanti Region.
Dodowa and Ada in the Greater Accra, Ho in the Volta Region and Koforidua, Kibi and Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region are next in line to be covered while Sunyani, Berekum and Dormaa Ahenkuro in the Brong Ahafo Region as well as Tamale, Bolgatanga and Wa would also be tackled later.
