The police in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, have confirmed to Joy News that the jail breaker and fugitive, Johnson Kombian has been arrested.A collaboration between the Ghana Police and their Togolese counterparts led to the arrest.The Northern Regional Police PRO, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, said if confirmed, the arrest will be welcome news.Johnson Kombian ambushed and killed two police officers and left another injured in the Nakpanduri area in the Northern region.He broke from jail in Tamale on Friday, January 15, 2010 under circumstances the police and prison authorities are yet to unravel.He had escaped twice from the Tamale Prisons, twice from Togo and once from the Gambaga Prisons.Until his escape, he was serving a five-year jail sentence for a previous escape while he was awaiting trial for robbery and attempted murder.When he broke from jail, Kombian publicly declared his intention to kill police officers and carried out his threat on October 17, 2010, killing two policemen and injuring another.Following that killing, the police stormed Nakpanduri and reportedly burnt down about 20 homes in search of the notorious criminal.Having failed to arrest him, the police placed a GH¢2,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest.Subsequently, the police said they suspected Kombian who had been alleged to have been terrorising residents of Gambaga, Nalerigu and Nakpanduri, had fled to Togo, and promised to liaise with their counterparts in that country to bring him to justice.That collaboration has yielded dividends with Saturday's arrest.Sources say, the fugitive's arrest was preceded by exchange of gunfire.Chief Inspector Tetteh told Joy News' Mamaha Shaibu, that given the avowed determination of the suspect to die rather than be captured, he was not surprised at the reported shooting between Kombian and security forces.Meanwhile one of the police officers shot and killed by Kombian is being buried today in the Eastern Region.Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
