Fire Saturday night gutted a warehouse belonging to waste management company, Zoomlion on the Spintex Road here in Accra.
The fire which started sometime after 6pm destroyed thousands of waste bins and other items stored in the warehouse.
Officials of the National Fire Service managed to restrict the blaze to just one of the compartments of the warehouse at the time Joy News got to the scene.
Joy News’ Israel Laryea spoke to Regional Fire Officer Edwin Blankson who said the plastic nature of the product required more water to extinguish the fire.
“Unfortunately the water situation is terribly bad that we have to go about 20 or 30 minutes drive to collect water,” he said.
According to a security officer at the warehouse, the fire started shortly when electricity was restored after a power outage.
The Head of Zoomlion Domestic Waste, Robert Coleman told Joy News the loss runs into millions of dollars.
He said over 35,000 waste bins, chemicals and other items had been consumed by the fire.
The company however maintains its operations will not be affected by the fire.
