The management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has called on its contributors to, as matter of urgency, update their documents to suit their current status to prevent delays in benefits payment. Frank Molbila, the Osu-Re branch manager of SSNIT who gave the advice, said inaccurate data such as invalid social security numbers and multiple social security registration numbers pose real challenges. In an interview with Asempa News, Molbila said most contributors who started contributing when they were not married nominated family members as next of kin. When they get married and desire to re-nominate next of kins, he said they must update the scheme with details of the new nominees. He said sometimes other nominees might die before the contributor and if no corrections are made before the contributor also dies, then they will have to apply the intestate succession law; PNDC Law 111. According to him, if a contributor leaves behind a spouse, then the children who are under 18 years will have 60% of the share before the 40% is given to the next of kin. Frank Molbila also noted that some contributors had two different dates of birth with employers and SSNIT. He said sometimes while an employee had reached the compulsory retirement age of 60 years at the workplace, records at SSNIT indicated 57 years. He stated that a retired contributor with accurate records could access benefits within six weeks but those with inaccurate records could access their benefits after three years.
