The James Town Police in Accra have arrested two women for allegedly steal­ing a one-month-old baby boy from his mother in the area.

The suspects are Joyce Asheley, 30 years-old and Lamley Mills, 34.

They are said to have on July 8, 2016 taken the baby from the side of his mother while she was fast asleep.

The baby was later found at Odorkor Official Town, a suburb of Accra, in the custody of Lamley Mills.

Narrating the arrest to Daily Guide, ASP Effia Tenge, Accra Regional police spokeswoman, said the James Town police received information of the missing child on July 8, 2016 and began investiga­tions.

According to the moth­er of the baby, Joyce Oblitey Commey, she went to bed on July 7 with her baby and that at midnight when she woke up to breastfeed the child, she could not find him.

Baby Exchanged For Ȼ460.00

According to ASP Effia Tenge, while the police were investigating the mat­ter, they learnt that Joyce Asheley took the child after claiming that Madam Oblitey (the mother) owed her È»60.00

According to informa­tion, Joyce Asheley, who is the girlfriend of the father of the complainant, paid the medical bill of È»60.00 before the child's mother was discharged from the hospital on June 8, 2016 when the child was born.

Later, when Joyce went to the house for her money, the complainant purport­edly refused to pay it and this reportedly resulted in this exchange of words and in the process, Joyce threat­ened to take the baby in exchange for the money.

ASP Tenge said when the police first invited Joyce for questioning, she denied the allegation and added that she did not know the whereabouts of the child.

On July 26, 2016, police had information that the child was with a woman at Odorkor Official Town and proceeded to the location.

Lamley Mills was found with the baby and was arrested.

Upon interrogations, she mentioned Joyce as the one who brought the child to her for safekeeping.

The child, according to ASP Tenge, was in good health, but a police medical form was issued for him (baby) to be sent to the hospital for proper medical attention.

The child has since been given back to the mother but the two sus­pects are still in custody assisting in investigations.
