Ghana’s energy situation will soon receive a major boost as the sector is currently witnessing a substantial increase in the deployment of renewable energy.
This comes as more Independent Power Producers, are applying for licenses enable them set up power generation plants.
The Energy commission is currently rolling out an aggressive renewable energy programme as part of efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix, aimed at addressing the energy crisis.
Speaking with Joy Business at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Ghana Renewable Energy Fair, Board Chairman of the commission Dr Kwame Ampofo said Ghana will soon have the largest solar plant in the sub-region.
"The renewable energy sector is growing very rapidly particularly the application of solar energy. It is interesting to know that several companies have applied for our licenses as Independent Power producers," Dr Ampofo said.
He said he is delighted to announce that they already have a private company which is the BXC and they have already established a huge utility skill, power plant which is based on solar PV technology near Winneba.
This plant has a capacity of 20 megawatts and it is the largest in the West Africa sub-region he added.
