The Nasara Club of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently expressed its disappointment in the government and organisers for excluding the National Chief Imam, Sheik Nuhu Sharubutu from the list of dignitaries that attended the durbar held in honour of the people of Ghana in Takoradi on Wednesday.
The ceremony was organised to officially signify the beginning of oil production on commercial scale at the Jubilee Field.
In a press release signed by the National Cordinator, Abubakari Sulemana, the group said the Chief Imam’s absence from the durbar has sparked controversy in Moslem circles around the country and abroad.
The release added that “an important occasion such as these requires solemn backing from religious leaders such as the Chief Imam and other spiritual leaders who have over the years prayed and held fast for the betterment and development of Ghana”.
“Nasara bemoans such actions and commissions by government and its agencies that seek to divide the nation directly or indirectly. This kind of governance sows seeds of disunity, division, and shows a lack of recognition and respect for civil society’s contribution to the development agenda,” the statement said.
The group however urged the Moslem community to be calm and called on the “Mills-Mahama administration to unite this country and demonstrate in their actions by showing more commitment in bringing everybody on board for national development”.
