The 2008 Flag-bearer of the Convention People’s Party has denied reports he is campaigning ahead of the party’s opening of nominations.
Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom told Joy News’ Araba Koomsom his actions have been to organize the party and not for his individual interest.
Allegations are rife in the media about Nduom holding secret meetings with party leaders in the Northern Region, ostensibly to campaign for re-election as the party leader and flag-bearer.
But Nduom says those allegations are untrue. Having been the party’s leader in 2008 Dr Nduom said it will be inappropriate not to help organize the party at the grassroots.
He said anytime he travels to any part of the country, he tries to mobilize the people; holding meetings publicly on the development of the party and not to campaign. His trip to the Northern Region was no different, he said.
He said people attribute wrong motives anytime they see him in the company of party members anywhere in the country, adding he is not perturbed by the wrong accusations once he knows he is doing the right thing.
Asked if he will put himself up for election as the party’s flag-bearer, Dr Nduom was evasive, saying "there is time for everything."
He said it is now time to build the party at the grassroots and when the time for nominations is up, he will make his intentions known.
Party chairman Ladi Nylander said the party will be surprised if reports of Nduom campaigning are true.
He conceded however that the party has agreed that individuals must assist in energizing the party and contribute to its grassroots development.
He noted that if a meeting is to organize the party centrally, any aspirant will be encouraged, but he was quick to add that the party will not take kindly to the violation of the rules on internal party elections.
