Angola national team coach Zeca Amaral said on Monday he was rooting for Ghana international striker Asamoah Gyan as CAF’s African Footballer of the Year, which will be designated in Cairo tonight between the Sunderland forward, Ivorian-born Chelsea’s talismans Didier Drogba and Cameroon captain Samuel Eto’o, who recently grabbed most valuable player with Inter Milan at the just concluded Fifa Club World Cup.
According to Angolan news site Portalangop, the Black Antelopes manager did not reveal the reasons for choosing to vote for the 25-year-old former Rennes player, but simply said Gyan “merits it more than the other two.”
Gyan has never won the CAF African Footballer of the Year award unlike the two other contenders who have claimed it multiple times, Eto’o, thrice and Drogba, twice.
Goal.com Arabic site’s exclusive report says Drogba would not likely be picked.
African national teams’ coaches and captains have the right to vote.
