International Boxing Federation (IBF) Bantamweight champion, Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko arrived in Ghana on Tuesday to a rapturous welcome at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra.
Agbeko touched down at approximately 0900 GMT in the company of members of his winning team and was met on arrival by a Government delegation led by Minister of Youth and Sports, Ms Akua Sena Dansua, Executive Officers of the Ghana Boxing Association (GBA) amongst other boxing stakeholders.
The welcome party also included the various supporters’ groups resplendent in the national colours.
At a media briefing later, Ms Dansua congratulated Agbeko for the feat which has raised the image of Ghana on the sports landscape once again.
Samir Captan, GBA Chairman also commended Ghanaians for their support and prayers in aiding Agbeko to reclaim the title.
Agbeko thanked Government, the media and the general public for their unrelenting support during the bout, a fortnight ago.
The IBF champion was later ushered through some principal streets of Accra accompanied by an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, thence to the Osu Castle to present the award to President John Evans Atta Mills.
Agbeko defeated Colombian Yonnhy Perez via unanimous decision to reclaim the title he lost to the latter 15-months ago.
