Nana Konadu Rawlings, a vice chairperson of the ruling National Democratic Congress has said the Mills-led administration has not yet fulfilled the promise of appointing 40 percent of women into key political positions.
Mrs. Rawlings who was speaking with Adom FM's Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Dwaso Nsem Thursday, said she believes the government has a lot to do in achieving its manifesto promise of appointing more women into the government if it intends to work towards women empowerment.
She said there are very competent women who can work in government when appointed but the onus lies on the one who is supposed to make that decision.
Mrs Rawlings who was speaking on her role in empowering women, said the 31st December Women’s Movement of which she is the founder has been working to train and empower women.
She said every week the movement receives thousands of applications from young people who want to join. Mrs Rawlings further added that these young ones are receiving various forms of support from the movement. The support, she said includes scholarships for some young ladies to acquire tertiary education and loans to support women in various business ventures.
Nana Konadu said empowering women is a process and that the movement has made significant progress in getting women to greater heights in the country, adding that these days there are laws to protect women and there have been massive education and training for women to become better at what they do.
“Empowerment is a process and empowerment of a nation includes the women, the men and the children and the youth,” she stated.
On the importance of Christmas, Nana Konadu said Christmas should be celebrated as a “family affair” to solve problems and build unity among members of families and groups. She said since her childhood, Christmas has always been a time families meet to share and to solidify bonds for the future.
She therefore stressed the need for Ghanaians to ensure that this Christmas is used by families in knitting closer ties.
Mrs Rawlings is of the belief that such family connections and meetings will help check the wrongs that children indulge in.
